What do these logos mean?

There are so many different logos that could be present on Italian products, but what do they even mean?

dop logo

This is the DOP logo. It stands for Denominazione di origine protetta. It is known as the PDO logo in English, which stands for Protected designation of origin.

This is a logo which is valid and recognized in the entire European Union (and countries where there is a bilateral agreement). This logo therefore does not guarantee that the product is Italian.

Instead, if a product has this logo, it means that that specific product can only be produced in a specific geographical location due to reasons such as history, tradition, know-how, and environment. All the raw materials come from the designated area.

Italy currently has 138 PDO products. Some examples are Parmigiano Reggiano, Gorgonzola, Prosciutto di Parma, Mozzarella di Bufala Campana, and Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena.

pgi igp

This is the IGP logo. It stands for Indicazione geografica protetta. It is known as the PGI logo in English, which means Protected geographical indication.

This is a logo which is valid and recognized in the entire European Union (and countries where there is a bilateral agreement). This logo therefore does not guarantee that the product is Italian.

Instead, if a product has this logo, it means that at least one stage of production has to take place in the designated area. Raw materials of a product with a PGI logo can come from outside of the designated area.

Italy currently has 82 PGI products. Some examples are Mortadella di Bologna, Cioccolato di Modica, and Bresaola della Valtellina.

This is the STG logo. It stands for Specialità tradizionale garantita. It is known as the TSG logo in English, which means Traditional specialty guaranteed.

This is a logo which is valid and recognized in the entire European Union (and countries where there is a bilateral agreement). This logo therefore does not guarantee that the product is Italian.

This logo highlights the traditional aspects, such as the way the product is made or its composition, without being linked to a specific geographical area. The name of a product being registered as a TSG protects it against falsification and misuse.

Italy currently has 4 TSG products. These products are Mozzarella, Pizza Napoletana, Amatriciana Tradizionale, and Vincisgrassi alla maceratese.
